"Becoming Black": you are not born black, you become it
Becoming Black, en français Devenir Noire, est le premier long-métrage d’Ines Johnson-Spain. Ce documentaire autobiographique, sorti en 2019, narre l’histoire peu commune de cette réalisatrice afro-allemande qui a grandi en Allemagne de l’Est dans les années 1960 au sein d’une famille blanche. Consciente de la différence manifeste de couleur de peau entre ses parents, son frère et elle, et malgré le déni absolu de son entourage, elle finit par découvrir la vérité sur sa filiation ; elle est le fruit d’une liaison adultère que sa mère a eu dans sa jeunesse avec un étudiant Togolais. Ines Johnson-Spain décide alors de se lancer sur les traces de son père biologique et d’en apprendre plus sur ses origines africaines. Cette quête identitaire la mènera de l’Allemagne au Togo, en passant par le Bénin. -

She Paradise: a short film made in Trinidad and Tobago
She Paradise is a short fictional film directed by Maya Cozier in 2019. The film follows Sparkle, a 17-year-old girl in search of emancipation, seeking a source of income to match her adventurous desires. While trying to integrate into a professional, free-spirited soca dance club, she has seductive but unsettling encounters, including that of Mica. In the maze of nightlife in Trinidad and Tobago, where sex and money intertwine, Sparkle slowly learns to come to terms with who she is and what she wants to become. -

In search of Ebony Vinyl revives Congolese music from the past, from Franklin Boukaka to Franco
The film follows Aidan, a record shop owner in Le Havre who is on the lookout for old vinyls of Congolese music, and the director, Rufin Mbou Mikima, in search of the voices of his childhood, including Franklin Boukaka, Franco and other Bantus of the Capital, in the furrows of Brazzaville and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
